Hattiesburg Zoo (photos)
We took the niece and nephew by the Hattiesburg Zoo and Park a couple of weeks ago. I thought it might be a nice idea to post some of the pictures here for the viewing pleasure of the world. Many of the pictures of animals didn’t turn out good due to the fence being in the shot. Often the camera would focus on the fence and leave a blurry animal in the background. As a result we probably got more decent photos of birds and plant life. When I was a kid I remember the zoo being a lot more fun than it is now. It also used to have more animals.
I think it was in 1983 or 1984 when a serious flood hit Hattiesburg. The zoo is located on the banks of Gordon creek (I think that’s the name). Well the creek flooded and killed many of the animals at the zoo. Now there was a famous couple at the zoo which was torn apart by the flood. The Hattiesburg Zoo had an elephant and a goat in the same pen. These two were like peas in a pod, you know hanging out together all day. Well the flood killed the goat and would you believe the elephant died shortly after due to a broken heart. That’s a true story. The elephant just lost the will to live…
