On a recent CNN interview with Wolf Blitzer Congressman Ron Paul was asked about Bob Barr and his bid as the Libertarian candidate for President.
I think [Bob Barr] is running a very important race, and I’m encouraging him. I haven’t endorsed him, but he’s saying the kind of things I like to hear said, and I hope he does real well
Ron Paul was quick to mention the Constitution Party candidate Chuck Baldwin…
But we also have Chuck Baldwin, who runs on the Constitution Party. His views are very very close to mine, and he worked very hard in my campaign, so for me to pick one over the other is not easy. I hope they both, together, get a lot of votes.
In a recent WashingtonPost.com report on Bob Barr a caller asked him about his support of the “Iraq Resolution”. Bob’s response was as follows..
I supported the Iraq resolution, but that was not an approval of war in Iraq and certainly was not approval for an occupation of Iraq. I support a quick removal of U.S. troops from Iraq. I want Iraq to take responsibility for its own security and rebuilding. I think we are in a dangerous situation with respect to Georgia right now, and I urge you to read some of the releases I’ve put out on my Web site. I want to put Defense back into our Defense Department and end the current perception that we are the world’s policeman.
I remember about six months ago listening to some conservative radio talk show host and his discussion of Ron Paul and Bob Barr. He basically defended Ron Paul and his supporters as constitutionalists. He then said that Bob Barr’s candidacy for the Libertarian Nominee was nothing more than a dirty attempt to pull votes from John McCain, implying that Barr was no constitutionalist.
Barr had this to say during the ‘call in’ session on the type of supreme court justices he would nominate..
I would appoint justices who would remain true to the Constitution. You can be assured that my appointees would not look favorably upon the Free Speech restrictions of McCain-Feingold. They would respect the Fourth Amendment requiring a judicial review before the government can eavesdrop, and uphold habeas corpus will apply at all times.
I would describe myself as a Libertarian Republican. But having watched the erosion of the GOP thanks to Bush, Cheney, and Dennis Hastert - I don’t think I can handle any more conservatives from this mold. The Republicans, during the Bush Adminstration, became much more obsessed with maintaining political power than they were about maintaining fiscal economic discipline and limited government. I’ve had all I can take of the Republicans for the time being. It’s time for conservatives to take a good look at third parties.
