Hey Ron,

If you change your oil regularly I don't see why you would have any problems. Remember that oil these days is designed to prevent gunk build up.. an awful lot of research goes into making sure that the oil is the safest lubricant possible for your engine. But here's a couple of things I would always do just to be safe. Always check your oil level to see if the engine is using any. If it is using a little oil try and determine where it's going. Pull the oil filler cap off and see if any residue is building up on it. Also when the oil is changed talk to the guy who is under the car removing the drain plug and oil filter...ask him if everything seems normal.

But most importantly change your oil every 3,000 miles.. Although this isn't necessary for most engines... it helps to catch any problems early on. Thats where a lot of people make a mistake, they may go 10,000 miles without changing their oil and then, sure enough, there's some gunk..

Hey Joy,

Well we used to push any oil that would bring us more of a profit. Mainly we promoted synthetics. Castrol was our house oil. Now we would have like a 4 year contract with Castrol. We received a $130,000 check up front, with the agreement, that we would sell a certain amount of synthetics. So we pushed the blends and full synthetics. Personally I would just stick with whatever the owners manual recommends. And I would not use a high mileage or a synthetic. These are nothing more than a higher price of oil that your vehicle doesn't need. At 153k there is no oil that is going to keep something from going wrong. Something is going to go wrong eventually - but rest assured that the possibility will not be reduced by using "high mileage'........ so save your money. You'll need it for a new car later on.

I don't think using the high mileage will cause any damage what so ever to your seals. I would just stick with whatever oil you were using in the past - you can switch back at the next oil change.

best regards

Hi there,
I agreed to "high mileage" oil at my last oil change. My van as 153K miles, but I have no problems with leaks (but my gas mileage has decreased in the last few years). Will "high mileage" oil damage my seals? Can I change back to regular oil without harming my engine? Is high mileage oil something that I should stick with?
Thanks!
