Smokey Mountains in Winter (pics)
I apologize in advance for having to cut down the quality of these pictures so they would load quickly onto this blog page. These pictures were taken New Years 2008 in Gatlinburg and the Smokey Mountain National Park (many in Cades Cove). It came a hard snow with lows in the lower teens. If you haven’t visited this Park - I hope these pictures encourage you to do so.
The first couple of pictures where taken on the streets of Gatlinburg New Years Eve night. There were thousands of people there. It was impressive, having never seen so many people on the streets of this hospitable Tennessee ski resort town.
We try to go to the Smokey Mountain National Park at least once a year. The preferred time is in the fall when the leaves are turning colors. This was the first time I’d seen this much snow and ice. I think my favorite photo of Cades Cove below is where the giant wheel on the grist mill is frozen solid. This was certainly a rare site!
Pictures by Kimberly Martin (huge Gatlinburg, TN fan). We’ll probably go back this year in the fall. I highly recommend the Bear Skin Lodge because it was surprisingly spaceous, with high ceilings and a gas log fireplace, it was almost as nice as having your own cabin. But we stayed in the corner room on the fourth floor next to the street. We had a balcony on the back with a perfect view of the river below. The wireless internet didn’t work very well in our corner room. The elevator is small and the ‘lazy river’ is small as well. However, the Bear Skin Lodge certainly ranks in my top three hotels in Gatlinburg.

Nice photos, but you forgot two very important shots.
1) The fresh ground cornmeal from the mill at Cade’s Cove
2) The sleds of Ober Gatlinburg
We used to have cornbread made from the cornmeal at Cade’s Cove almost every year. Haven’t had a bite of it since I entered my own debt prison.
