Although I would like to see any third party Presidential Nominee have a chance to be included in the debates with Obama and McCain - I realize it isn’t likely to happen. The last time it occurred was with Ross Perot and not to mention these debates are largely controlled by the GOP and Democratic Parties. Anywho, here’s an email I just received from the Libertarian Party…

Dear Patriot,

This past Friday, I wrote to you regarding our attempt to be included in the Saturday event held at Saddleback Church featuring both Senators John McCain and Barack Obama.

Barack Obama received one full hour during his interview.

The same for John McCain.

The Libertarian Presidential nominee, now on the ballot in 38 states, received no time during this nationally televised event.

That is because late Friday evening, U.S. District Court Judge David Carter denied our request to be included in the event.

His reasoning? I’ll let Judge Carter explain in his own words:

“Plaintiffs will lose out on a fair amount of exposure and the opportunity to express their views in a popular forum. On the other hand, halting this event would deny the other candidates the opportunity to be heard and would deprive the public of an opportunity to see the candidates and hear their views.

“Forcing Saddleback to include another candidate at the last moment could cause serious logistical problems and take away from the presentations of other candidate. This might well disrupt the planned presentation.”

Judge Carter closed by saying:

Barr and Root “will have many other opportunities in the coming months to express their views and make their candidacy known.”

When I first read that report, I’ll admit I was a bit hot under the collar. In response to the Judge Carter’s final comment, I angrily said to myself, “Name one!”

I’ve been through this before with the Perot campaign. In 1992, my candidate was included in all three presidential debates. In 1996, the opposite occurred.

What was the difference between the two runs?

After our success in ‘92, the powers that be decided that it would never happen again.

Since Ross Perot’s inclusion in the debates, no third-party or independent candidate has even come close to taking a place behind the debate podium.

And for the past 16 years, the two-major parties have been on a wildly-successful streak of keeping out competition by holding the debate stage all to themselves.

Call me a bit grumpy over the matter, but I think it’s time that we break that winning streak by getting Bob Barr into the national debates.

I don’t think that I stand alone on this issue.

As a matter of fact, I know that I’m not alone. You agree with me and that’s a good start, but a report that I read late Friday night led me to believe that we can do a bit better.

According to the polling firm, Zogby International, a MAJORITY of Americans want Bob Barr included in the national debates!

The poll showed that 55% of likely voters want Bob Barr included in the debates. Of the respondents, 69% of independents felt that Bob Barr deserves a place in the debate, while 52% of Democrats and even 50% of Republicans agreed.

You, me, and a majority of Americans want Bob Barr taking the stage next month with John McCain and Barack Obama.

You, me, and a majority of Americans . . . that’s not too bad now is it?

we can make this happen.

I need your aggressive support from now until Election Day.

I need your contributions - as much as you can give.

I need you to spread the word far-and-wide about our candidate.

Finally, our nation - and especially the national media - needs to witness an avalanche of support made possible by a dedicated group of Americans who truly love liberty and will fight to get it back.

We will make this happen.

Only a few short weeks remain until the Commission on Presidential Debates begins their “selection process” for candidates.

Donate, Spread the Word, Make Noise. Do not wait for orders from headquarters.

I appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

Russell Verney
Campaign Manager

P.S. Here’s a link to the Zogby poll that was released on Friday night. I hope you are as excited by it as I was. If so, please consider making a donation today and if you haven’t already, visit our online store so that you can visibly show your support to friends and neighbors.

I’ve got a feeling that if the Democrats could do it over they’d be voting for Hillary Clinton instead of Barack Obama. It’s hard to imagine that Obama could lose to McCain but it’s actually becoming a possibility. And with Obama rising as fast as he did (without any scruntiny from the politically correct press whom seems to believe that questioning a ‘black’ candidate about anything hard is racist) I’d say he may very well fall as fast as he rose.

If the media had done their job in the first place, instead of just being a bunch of white guilt propagandists, Obama would have been out of the race long ago. So now we get to watch as the American people unwrap the real Obama - piece by piece, sound bite by sound bite, and email by email…

Since Lieberman’s name has been kicked around often lately as a Vice Presidential potential for McCain I thought I could throw in my two cents worth so here it is. Joe Lieberman would only add more votes to the McCain Presidential bid. If McCain wins it will be due to American’s fear of Obama. That being said let’s begin by summarizing a couple of other possibilities.

Mitt Romney has been bragged upon as being a viable candidate. He isn’t. He couldn’t even win Iowa despite out spending every other candidate severely. He’s a Mormon and most Christians regard them as a cult. That’s just how it is. Romney brings nothing but negatives to the ticket.

Mike Huckabee is a decent choice. He won Iowa despite spending hardly a dime. He appeals to Democrats and Republicans alike and has that likeable pulpit method about him. In general he comes across like a decent man who cares about Americans. He did a good job in Arkansas of pulling Dem votes.

Joe Lieberman pissed off all the Dems with his pro-war attitude. Yet he still managed to win as an independent (since the Dem party kicked him out). He, like McCain, is regarded as a candidate willing to cross party lines in order to accomplish what is best for America, not necessarily what’s best for his party.

Lieberman is a man whom many Dems - weary of Obama - would be willing to support. That being said, Lieberman can’t hurt McCain with true Conservatives. McCain has the true Conservative vote regardless since Obama is an extreme socialist racist whitey hater. They’re so scared of Obama they’ll vote for McCain no matter who runs with him.

John McCain has to focus on picking up those independent voters and those Dems who are weary of Obama’s inexperience and questionable associations… Lieberman is the best choice for McCain.

My site is currently getting hit by a CAST sql injection attack which, so far, seems specific for servers with coldfusion. However, according to a visitor to this article the attack had evolved, effecting MSSQL. Here’s a sample of the attack string start..

?;DECLARE%20@S%20CHAR(4000);SET%20@S=CAST

Here’s a more complete sample of attack

Here’s another good article concerning this sql injection that’s wreaking havoc.

First off, if you see anything like this hitting your site - then yes your site is being hit by a ‘hack your site’ attempt. This can be coming from a particular person who wants to mess up your day. But often they are coming from a bot or serveral bots trolling the web. See also Making Money Online, Ten Things I Wish I Knew As A Beginner

In the case of the above mentioned attack the injection adds a script to the end of each table/file - once this file is accessed by a visitor to your site they are redirected automatically to another site which can download a virus onto their computer… The domain from which the virus is generated seems to be 127.0.0.1

The attack normally starts out by hitting a specific url. That’s how it was for me, it was just hitting the one article. But hours later I’m getting hits on various url’s and the attacks are coming from various IP’s each time. Hence it can’t be blocked by IP.

It seems the infection, which can dowload a virus onto a visitors computer, is repaired by rewriting the attack string to remove the script from the database tables or by running query. There are other possible repairs as outlined in the above mentioned article..

Some sites are getting hit thousands of times in a single day with this attack. Hopefully this vile collection of garbage code will be struck down shortly…

Here’s the steps I take when I see an attack

I’m still a novice (I can’t even run a query automatically to scan a table and remove a particular text). First off, back up weekly and download onto your p.c.. Backup your files onto an external hard drive weekly.

1. I password protect all public directories (to give me time to research the attack). Since this site averages about 20 visitors per hour it’s not causing a big problem to shut it down for 30 minutes.

2. I block the i.p. address of the attack if it appears to be coming from only one (unlike this one).

3. Using google search engine I research the attack to see if my site may be vulnerable.

4. I contact my host to inform them of the attack and inquire about certain details I’ve read as relates to vulnerability. “Are you guys running coldfusion?” for example. Some attacks can hit one website, break through, and then actually corrupt other sites supported by your host.

5. If my site is vulnerable I patch the vulnerability. Sometimes I may have to update my files to latest version of wordpress for example (which should be done anyway)…

6. I may change my passwords if the attack is designed to steal them…

7. After I feel safe about my security I remove the password protection from the directories. In the above mentioned case these are the steps I have taken. Though I’m still getting hit by this attack bot I feel confident my site is hardened enough to prevent this hack.

Even in this hypersensitive insane racially charged atmosphere we call reality, Bill O’Reilly still manages to call Mr. T a “Boy” on his show moments ago. Mr. T was on to defend his commercial for the candy bar Snickers which was pulled for ‘homosexual insensitivity’ from British television. The “Boy” comment is a little after the four minute mark.

Mr. T went on to defend the commercial as non-homophobic and that the guy in the video is a speed walker. In the process of T pleading his case on The Factor, Bill says ”I believe ya Boy”. In other words “I get it… you can stop defending yourself now”…

I guess I was just a little surprised to hear Bill O’Reilly refer to an adult male, not to mention an international star as “Boy”…

I’m sure O’Reilly meant nothing by the incident but it was still amusing to witness Bill produce this spontaneous faux pas…

Here in Hattiesburg I’ve a few sources whom ‘associate’ with the Farves and the claims they make contradict each other in regards to Favre’s upcoming season. Brett has expressed his personal desire to play for Tampa Bay according to one local source here in Hattiesburg. As expressed by ESPN a trade to Tampa bay for Farve is a realistic possibility. However, according to Favre’s manager James (Bus) Cook, Favre won’t be going to Tampa Bay. This news comes via a friend who spoke with Cook in an ‘off duty’ style discussion today in Hattiesburg about Favre and where his career is moving. From the discussion with Favre’s manager, my friend concluded that Favre wouldn’t be moving over to Tampa Bay. It’s looking like he’ll move on to the New York Jets…

A trade could be coming next, with Tampa Bay re-emerging as a potential destination after seemingly being eliminated from consideration in recent weeks.

Farve, after 17 years and a remarkable career, decided to quit. Mentally and physically tired, Favre seemed to be looking forward to more time on his Mississippi ranch.

After flirting with retirement for years, Brett Favre means it this time. The Green Bay Packers quarterback quit Tuesday after a 17-season career in which he dazzled fans with his grit, heart and rocket of an arm.

“I know I can still play, but it’s like I told my wife, I’m just tired mentally. I’m just tired,” Favre, a three-time NFL MVP, told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen in a voice mail message.

“If I felt like coming back — and Deanna [his wife] and I talked about this — the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl. To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful,” Favre said in the message.

He then changed his mind and rose from the fires like the Phoenix he is…

Growing up and working in the Hattiesburg area - citizens here have a certain pride about Brett Favre. After all he was educated and even played some fabulous football for the University of Southern Mississippi. And due to his success as one of the best Quarter Backs of all time - these locals not only walk the clouds with him…. they regard him as a God. Favre stands as a pinnacle of evidence that the best of America is still born and raised right here in the South.

Writing this article reminds of an NPR radio discussion I heard two years ago about Brett Favre renewing his contract for another year. One of the NPR contributors said “What’s he gonna do if he doesn’t play football next year? Cut grass in Mississippi?” I thought that was one of the funniest and yet regrettable comments I heard about this simple yet historical place where I live.

I find it regrettable that Favre, after making such a fuss about retiring, would come back a few months later and re-enter the field. Much like the South and our devotion to an old fashioned lifestyle, Brett Favre may have cold feet about pursuing career changes into a new market. Off the football field a career path awaits Favre, but the accuracy of his pass or the agility of his feet won’t be there to guide him. It’s time for the man to begin writing a new chapter in what will continue to be a Favre Legacy.

Working in the utilities industry I’m forced to access private properties dozens of times per day and deal with just as many angry dogs. Honestly it took me about two years to understand the behavior and agressiveness of various types of dogs. After two years I’ve grown extremely confident walking right past dogs that would have most folks running. When I first began this job I was bitten once by a small terrier on the back of the leg. That was the first and last time. There’s a few simple rules that I’ve developed which guarantee that I won’t get bitten by the local angry canine.

Although the methods that I’m about to discuss work great on 99% of angry dogs, there’s always that 1% out there which I call “Lethal”. And a ‘Lethal’ is exactly what these dogs are. Usually in excess of seventy pounds these dogs are bred and raised to mercilessly attack anything that comes near them. The pitt bull related breed is the most common (and usually most aggressive) of this 1% lethal group. I’ll discuss how to handle a lethal at the end of this article. So let’s stop wasting time and get down to business….

Pepper spray and tasers

Although I’ve seen other workers do it I personally don’t carry pepper spray. The reason I don’t carry it is because if I can stop the dog with Mace I could have stopped him anyway. Besides you stand a good chance of spraying yourself with the stuff. Granted I’m a man but I only weigh 135lbs. In that rare incident where you are attacked by the 1% mangler I doubt if you’ll even have time to grab the stuff, point it, and then get the dog in the face. It can even make the situation worse if you spray yourself on accident. The pepper spray may work great for some people but it’s not my preference.

I’ve heard a few people talk lately about using a taser on an angry dog. My reasoning for not liking the taser is the same for not liking Mace. If a dog does attack you won’t have much time. If you tase the dog and he’s touching you, there’s a good chance that you’ll get some voltage as well. I am not at all interested in tasing myself. Though pepper spray or a taser may keep an angry dog on your morning walk at bay, if that stuff stops him you could have used other options anyway.

Confident attitude and actions are the best defense

Before I approach a home I make a lot of noise. If there are any dogs there I want them to know I’m there before I get into the middle of their territory. I’d rather have some time to make a judgment call about whether or not it’s smart to go any further. About 99% of all angry dogs can be held at bay without having to come into physical contact with the dog. Recently I was training my nephew on a project for my company. There is a very noticeable difference in his body language and mine once a dog comes out barking. I don’t stop or even slow down my pace. After all I have a hard hat and a plastic notepad which can be used to block or even throw at the dog if necessary.

Normally I just walk through the yard confidently and do my work. If the dog comes too close I will yell at the dog as though I am angry with it. I use an authoritative tone and face the dog, never turning my back. I only turn away once I know he’s a safe distance away. I then cast a glance in his direction every 30 seconds or so. If the dog doesn’t stop and comes in close I remove my hard hat and prepare to defend myself. I’ll yell at the dog to let him no that I mean business. This is for his own protection because I will not hesitate to hurt him. And that is the attitude you have to take with a dog intent on biting you. You must defend yourself no matter what the situation or how small a dog. Small dogs can do quite a bit of damage as well and may even carry rabies. A technician for my company was performing inspection after Hurricane Katrina came through the Pine Belt. A dog ran out from under a porch, bit her on both legs, and returned under the porch. Our supervisors arrived, collected her and the dog, and had the dog tested at the Vet. The dog had rabies and she had two weeks off to recover. This dog was around twenty pounds.

Carry something in hand which can be used for defense

The most common item that people will carry on their morning walk to fend off angry dogs is a stick. A stick is a good idea. Dogs are used to seeing humans with sticks in their hands and they know what pain a stick can inflict. Use a walking stick that will not break or fall apart on you. I would strike the stick hard on the ground a few times to test it. Or you could just buy an axe handle from the local hardware store. If you are attacked by more than one dog use the stick to keep them at bay and slowly back out of their territory if possible. But watch out for the one circling behind you because he’s the one that’s going in for the kill. Do your best to keep all dogs in front of you. Dogs hate a frontal assault and 99% of them won’t do it unless they’re already convinced they won’t receive pain in return.

Keep in mind that anything can be used to keep a dog off of you. For example, a garbage can lid, tricycle, or even a handful of rocks can help. Your goal is to keep the dog’s teeth from making contact with you. It really doesn’t matter how you do it. Just make sure you remain on your feet. Dogs become bold once the prey falls down….. keep this in mind.

The throw test

Rarely I’ll have a dog which won’t respond properly to the yell test. That’s the one where I act like I’m his owner and scold him back onto the porch. If this doesn’t stop the dog I will posture myself in the defense position. I may remove my hard hat and grip my tablet tighter, crouching somewhat for a possible attack. I’ll also scan my surroundings for anything I can use against the dog. Often a rake or shovel will be within a safe distance.

Now if the dog comes in close….. like say five feet…. I’ll throw my hard hat at the dog. This usually sends them running for cover. Throwing an object is one of the best defenses against the standard angry dog. Better than a stick, the dog now understands that you possess the ability to inflict pain from a distance. This has a psychological effect on the dog and usually puts them back in the safe zone. The dog now understands that you have the ability and willpower to mount an aggressive attack against him.

The angry pack of weiner dogs

Often dogs will run in packs. Once I was encircled by six weenie dogs (dachshunds). I had to do quite a bit of kicking (at them not actually making contact) to give me enough room to make my way back to the truck. Once I opened the truck door one of them made a lunge for the back of my ankle so I had to let him run into the bottom of my boot. On my job there are often so many dogs I simply don’t have time to wait and see if the owners are at home, talk to them about their dog, and then do my work. When dealing with more than one dog try and keep them in front of you and inflict pain on any that come within striking distance.

Making physical contact with the dog

I’ve only had to kick a couple of dogs. These were the ones that came in too close. They gave me no choice but to defend myself. I hate having to do this because I know this dog is someone’s pet that they love very much. And I also understand that the dog is only doing what he thinks is right. Therefore my goal is simply to defend myself and nothing more. Dogs will always become more aggressive once their owners come outside. There’s nothing worse than a person that comes outside, making the situation worse, and then has no control over their dog. Personally, if the dog was mine I think I could manage to get his attention.

You have to be willing to maime or even take out a dog if necessary. And I suppose that’s why I now possess this confidence when it comes to dogs. I know that no matter what happens I can put a whipping on 99% of the dogs out there. I also know that I have the willpower to accomplish this if necessary. And that’s what you have to develop. If you want to be able to handle bad dogs you have to possess the physical and mental ability to defeat them. Bear in mind that you are smarter than the dog (well you should be anyway if you can read this article). It’s always better not to access a property than to access a property and come into physical contact with a dog. Which brings me to the 1% Lethal.

Handling the 1% Lethal

About 1% (or even less) of the dogs out there may give me more of a fight than I feel like fending off. These dogs are often pitt bulls, boxers, rottweiler, doberman, and chows. The blue heeler is in the 99% category but still should be mentioned. These are one of the most conniving dogs out there almost universally. These love to catch your back turned and come in silently for the kill. What separates the 1% from the other 99% is a lethal combination of temperment and size. Not only are these dogs often angry, they’re also large enough to do some real damage and possibly break through my defense. If I see one of these dogs on the property I will pull up in my truck to see how the dog reacts. If he seems reasonable I will roll down my window and talk gently to him. If I see his tail (or nub) wagging then I’ll crack open the door so he can get a smell. Once he gets the smell he’ll decide if I’m a friend or a foe. If he keeps wagging the tail or evens opts for the jump into the truck option - I’ll go ahead and get out and do what I need to do. Bear in mind that if another angry dog arrives after you’ve gotten out, the angry dog can excite the calmer larger one.

If the dog is not friendly I leave if the owners are not home. I signal their attention by honking my horn. If no one comes outside I just exit and come back later to see if they can put the dog up. Let’s suppose I entered a back yard to do some inspection on a utility service. Once there a large pitt bull charges me. The mean ones just come straight for you. The worse thing you can ever do is turn your back and run. The only way I would run is if I knew I had enough time to clear the fence before the dog gets to me. Running heightens the dogs confidence and gurantees a mangling. Instead I’ll defend myself as best I can - working my way towards an exit. I’ll also do my best to stay on my feet, sidestepping the dogs lunges if possible. I’ll do my best to keep something in my hands between me and the dog. If the dog is too aggressive I’ll pursue whatever means necessary to stop him. Unfortunately this is one of the negative parts of my job. Accessing another citizens private property is always a risk.

In New Orleans we had a technician that needed to enter a back yard which contained an angry rottweiler. This person followed procedure by knocking on the door and speaking with the owner of the dog. He agreed to keep the dog indoors until the technician was done working. While the technician was working the lady of the house (not knowing the guy was in the back yard) let the dog go back outside. Our technician took a pretty serious mangling. This is always a possibility with the job that I have. Therefore I’ll often carry a shovel or other object for defense when working in high risk situations…

I’ve just finished the third repair on my clothes dryer in the last seven years. I bought this dryer used in 1995. It was probably about ten years old at that time, so it’s around twenty three years old now. I try to save money everywhere I can so when the dryer broke again I decided to pull out my maintenance hat once more. It’s not the best looking appliance in the house but it still works good.

A dryer is not a complicated piece of machinery. There’s only a few important parts that normally break over the years. So far on my dryer the parts that I’ve personally replaced are the heating element, broken door switch, and the belt that spins the basket.

About seven years ago the heating element went out. The dryer would still come on and the basket would spin but the clothes didn’t heat up. So, for the first time in my life I decided to find a heating element and replace it. It wasn’t too hard to find (it’s the shiny long thing on the right). I believe the heating element was around $35 at that time and took me about thirty mintues to replace. Now the picture below is what the backside of the dyer looks like when the access panel is removed.

Before I started working on the dryer I took a shop vac and vacuumed out the inch thick lint layer which was resting peacefully along the bottom. It’s amazing what you can find inside a dryer. There was money in there, jewelry, and even a pair of thongs from the dark ages…

My old room mate slammed the door on the dryer about four years ago, breaking the tiny plastic latch which holds the door shut. The dryer would only come on if the door was kept closed. Well it seemed to me that a door latch would work just as well, besides I had one handy.

About a month ago the belt on the dryer broke. The dryer would still come on and would still warm up but the basket couldn’t spin. This was the hardest repair to do because you had to take the front off the dryer. Then the basket had to be supported while the new belt was installed. The belt had to be carefully placed into position on the pulley and motor assembly.

Once finished this repair took about an hour and a half in all. Now if I had bought a new dryer everytime something broke I would have spent at least $250 in the last seven years. The belt only cost me $17 and now there’s another repair at which I’m a first class professional maintenance man.

I’ve managed to produce a modern and updated version of the Pledge of Allegiance. Since this country no longer stands for what it once did I figure it’s about time to start admitting it. Finally, I can face the flag once more with confidence and honesty.

Never in the history of the world has there been a government more owned by an elite ruling class than the present United States of America. I’m not talking about hard working people who’ve managed to become millionaires by relentless drive and creativity. I’m talking about a handful of elites who’ve prospered by buying off politicians and convincing the masses to relinquish their natural rights in exchange for physical/financial security, safety, and prosperity.

I pledge allegiance to the United Coporations of America…. and to the Oligarchy for which it stands, one police state under tyranny, in debt, with welfare and hedonism for all. - Debt Prison.net

”I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.”
